About Dongdaemun Market

Dongdaemun Market situated in northeastern Seoul is one of the largest fashion hubs in South Korea. The market is named after the Heungginjimun Gate, which is more commonly known as Dongdaemun, meaning the “Great East Gate.” Heungginjimun Gate was one of the eight city gates along the Seoul City Wall during the Joseon Dynasty. The historic site is still a major tourist spot today.

Dongdaemun Market, or DDM for short, was originally established in July 1905 in Yeji-dong. The market was destroyed during the Korean War and rebuilt in 1959. It is now Korea’s largest wholesale and retail shopping district, featuring 26 malls, 30,000 specialty shops and 50,000 manufacturers.

As many shops are open overnight, Dongdaemun Market attracts locals and tourists alike at all hours for bulk purchases, last-minute shopping or just to hang out. You can find anything from clothes and fabrics to toys and electronics at bargain prices. Notable shopping malls in the area include Doota Mall, Migliore, Hello APM and Good Morning City. The district is also home to the futuristic Dongdaemun Design Plaza, a cultural hub known for hosting events like Seoul Fashion Week.
